Insurance in Road Freight Transport

In the road transport sector, the value of goods being transported often reaches significant figures.
But what happens if the goods are damaged?
What if they are lost, and the carrier does not have adequate insurance coverage?

Types of Insurance Policies

The cost of transport must also take into account the insurance policies stipulated by the carrier, which generally fall into three main categories:

  • Vehicle Insurance: every carrier holds insurance covering their owned transport vehicles.
  • Carrier’s Liability Insurance: each carrier takes out insurance on the cargo based on the type of goods being transported.
During transport, goods may suffer irreparable damage caused by various factors — such as water or adverse weather, road accidents, fires, or theft of the vehicle or its contents.
  • Supplementary Insurance: when the value of the transported goods exceeds the maximum coverage provided by the carrier’s liability policy, the client is offered an additional insurance policy to cover the excess amount.

If one of these situations occurs and the goods are indeed damaged, a dispute is usually opened.
Such cases rarely result in a quick assignment of liability followed by prompt compensation.
Legal proceedings tend to be lengthy and, above all, costly due to the legal expenses involved.

The Importance of Comprehensive Coverage

A comprehensive insurance policy ensures fast and fair compensation, covering most potential risks associated with freight transport.
This type of coverage supports all forms of liability — even when, for instance, the client improperly packages the goods, or the goods deteriorate during transport.

BRIDGE carries out thorough and meticulous checks on both shippers’ and carriers’ insurance policies, helping to identify and limit liability for each party involved.
Thanks to its 360° transport management approach, BRIDGE can immediately verify responsibilities and resolve disputes quickly and effectively.
