Can Road Transport Be Environmentally Sustainable?

Across Europe, the logistics industry has undergone a major transformation.
Considering that around 90% of freight transport is carried out by road, the new goal is clear: to reduce CO₂ emissions through innovative models that make the entire sector more efficient and sustainable.

Reducing Environmental Impact Is a Responsibility

BRIDGE aligns itself with this vision, implementing a precise match between transport demand and supply to partially or completely eliminate empty trips.
This creates a new perspective for freight transport, one that aims to deliver to future generations a world where eco-sustainability is deeply rooted in every industry — a goal that lies at the very heart of BRIDGE’s mission.

However, the recent economic crisis has led many transport companies to make choices not aligned with modern sustainability standards.
Many old, polluting, and less safe vehicles are still on the road.
To illustrate:

  • The average age of light trucks (<3.5t) in Italy is 9 years and 4 months,

  • For heavy trucks (>3.5t) it’s 19 years and 7 months,

  • 73% of light trucks and 45% of heavy trucks are over 10 years old,

  • Special-purpose vehicles average 9 years and 6 months (<3.5t) and 13 years and 7 months (>3.5t).

These alarming figures highlight the need for an innovative and sustainable push — one that BRIDGE is committed to providing.

If it’s true that a fully loaded truck emits about 30% more CO₂ than an empty one, the real solution lies in eliminating empty runs altogether.
By doing so, it becomes possible to reduce the total number of transport vehicles circulating within the European Union — and therefore the sector’s overall emissions.

BRIDGE represents a forward-looking vision for the future of transport — enabling carriers and shippers to meet their respective needs efficiently, increasing revenues for the former and reducing costs for the latter, all while maintaining a strong focus on environmental impact.

The BRIDGE S.R.L. project, also made possible through the support of the Emilia-Romagna Regional Programme ERDF 2021–2027, is aimed at the evolution of logistics management: from process digitalization towards an intelligent automation model based on Industry 4.0 technologies. The initiative seeks to optimize the supply chain and administrative activities through the integration of Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, and Big Data, with the objective of making logistics flows more efficient, scalable, and sustainable. The main expected results include the reduction of empty trips (green logistics), the automated generation of quotations, and greater operational capacity in international markets.
